How I Pray
  Audio of the poem

There comes a moment
The accumulation of many moments
Where you must come to terms
With your own self

And you call out to God
Praying for release
From the never ending task
Of being in this body
Caught up in the story
You’ve so unconsciously created

It could be called
A come to Jesus moment
A just as I am moment
Where you acknowledge
Your foolishness, your pride
And stubborn insistence
On being right

Or being a sinner
Or being such a good person
Or whatever else you hold as you.
The whole package!
And you drop deep down
Into the core of your self
With complete willingness
To let go of it all.

Don’t get stuck on your foibles
And guilty mea culpas ~
Remember your mind swells
And fills up with
Whatever you focus on.

So focus on God
With the complete assurance
That your prayer
Is being heard.

And you speak to God
As you would to your dearest friend
Who you trust with your life
Someone you know
Has your back
And loves you unconditionally,
Someone who possesses the power
To change your world.

And as you share the issues
Of your own existence
With that compassionate listener
You come to understand
That there is no other
Going to come to your rescue

And that you are actually having
A heart to heart conversation
With your own Self
Who is God,
And who has been waiting
For this very moment
To arrive

And instantly responds
To the sincerity and honesty
And sweet adoration
Of your prayer.

And then you become
Your own fairy Godmother,
Your own bestower of happiness,
Love and freedom

In a life forever changed
